 2017 Preview 


       Southern Academy completed the 2016 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class A region two, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Southern Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Chambers Academy by a score of 62-14.

       It marked the first time since the 2010 season that the Cougars qualified for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, the Southern Academy football program has struggled with a record of 21-52.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Southern Academy has managed to compile a record of 165-111. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class A and 11th in the AISA. Their last winning season was 2009.

       The Cougars are led by head coach Mike Smith who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-7 record in his first season at Southern Academy. The Cougars saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Smith arrived. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 4-7 (36.4%).

       The Southern Academy Cougars will play in Class A region two during the 2017 season.

       The Cougars will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season.

       The Cougars open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Jackson Academy on Friday, September 1 at McCorquodale Stadium. Last year the Jackson Academy Eagles finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class AA region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class AA playoffs to Lakeside by a score of 42-35.

       Southern Academy and Jackson Academy have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 6-9-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2016 with Jackson Academy winning by a score of 40-14.
